A Question for Candidates

There is a very interesting post this morning on the “Baie-D’Urfé Notre Ville/Our Town” facebook group from a citizen who is commenting further on the recent land purchase on the lakeshore. Very much worth reading … if you are a member of the group please check it out, if not we will post here once we get permission from the author.

Anyway, one of the major reasons given by the council for spending $1.45M on the property was the presence of a main drainage pipe into the lake for which the town does not have a servitude. They stated a need to have control over the pipe in case of service access, blockage, leakage etc. That sounds fairly reasonable until you realize (see the FB article referred to) that there are quite a number of other, similar pipes in the town. All leading across private, multi-million dollar, properties to empty into the lake. Ask yourselves – does the town have servitudes for all of those? What happens if they need repair or servicing – will the town be held to ransom by the landowners? What was so special about the pipe on the land we have so expensively purchased?

When candidates for the election knock on your door why not ask them about this? If they are running on the “Équipe Baie-D’Urfé Team” ticket they are almost all incumbent councillors who voted for the land purchase so they ought to have the answers.

    1. There are six names running on that ticket of which three are incumbents – but I think most people will assume that anyone running under a given ticket is in agreement with a given set of ideas (nothing wrong with that) and generally supportive of what has gone before. All six of them most certainly should “have the answers”.

  1. Waiting to see how accurate this description is. Do you entertain other POVs or is this just here as one sided propaganda? Guess we will find out.

    OPEN BAIE DURFE

    Who are we?

This is an independent news and opinion site that simply shares information and asks questions that are not generally available elsewhere in the town

    1. Totally open … anyone can send a text to baiedurfecitizens@gmail.com and it will be posted. Of course we have our own opinions – as you have deduced – but we are also committed to open discourse and as this is the only generally open forum in town we are making it available. Of course, we have the right to disagree with what you might say, or we might surprise you and agree, but we will do it openly and honestly and without resorting to ad hominems, of that you may be sure. Our platform, in as much as we have one at all, is that this town is in sore need of an open forum on the internet where all residents can discuss and exchange views. If the councillors are able to hear the views of everyone and not just the few who can come to meetings then their final decisions will be better informed than they might be otherwise. While we are on this theme, we strongly advocate for live-streaming of all public meetings … for the same reason.

By the way, if this site does end up airing the views of one group of citizens more than another it will only be because not all points of view have taken advantage of the offer of an open forum that we are laying before the town.
